University of New Mexico Lobos
With no nearby professional sports franchises to root for, residents of New Mexico put their faith in the annual performance of the Lobos of the University of New Mexico. Unfortunately for Lobos fans, the school's performance in college sports' two prominent categories, football and basketball, has been lackluster of late. Though the football team might post a quality 8-4 record in 2007, they haven't won their conference since the 1960s. Basketball is a slightly different story. The Lobos who play indoors have a history of appearing in the prestigious National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament, and if they fail at that often advance to college's less respectable National Invitation Tournament. The Lobos basketball team has been mediocre over the last two years, but a promising 5-0 record to start the 2007-08 season might spell postseason success for at least one University of New Mexico team.
